Were Two Pyramids Just Discovered in Egypt Using Google Earth?

Media_http8mshcdncomw_ddbdu
via mashable.com

Here’s a good one for all those who got excited when it was rumored the lost continent of Atlantis was found on Google Earth: A researcher now thinks she’s found two undiscovered pyramids in Egypt on Google Earth.

The two possible complexes are located about 90 miles apart from each other in Upper Egypt (the southern part of the country). Satellite archaeology researcher Angela Micol wrote on her website Google Earth Anomalies that the sites contain unusual mounds with noteworthy features.

“Upon closer examination of the formation, this mound appears to have a very flat top and a curiously symmetrical triangular shape that has been heavily eroded with time,” Micol.

New Digg Team Aims for Transparency by Publishing Redesign in Progress

Media_httpallthingsdc_ubveo
via allthingsd.com

The oft-chronicled tale of Web 2.0 star Digg includes multiple incidents where the company alienated its users by making dramatic changes and policy decisions without much warning.

The new Digg — bought by John Borthwick’s Betaworks — apparently won’t be like that. Today, the company published screenshots and overviews of its upcoming product overhaul, six weeks into the new ownership.

Digg still had more than 16 million monthly unique visitors when it was bought, but it’s possible that redesigning out in the open may help woo back the critical techies who had deemed Digg irrelevant.

Media_httpcdnlcomplex_hmqhy
via complex.com

So far in 2012 we’ve seen great companies fall apart and new companies come together. We’ve seen the U.S. Department of Justice take down websites thought to be pirating copyrighted material as well as websites come together to fight against the U.S. House of Representatives. We watched companies, big and small, break records, and a corporation once thought to be staid and devoid of creativity unveil one of the most promising devices of the past few years. Suffice to say, 2012 so far has been full of surprises. We’re not sure what the rest of the year holds, but if it’s anything like January through July, we can’t wait. Take a look back at the 10 biggest news stories to rock the tech world.

Digg sold for $500,000

Media_httpcdntechicom_ghhjd
via techi.com

Betaworks, a New York technology development firm that has had its eyes set on news distribution for some time, has purchased former social new powerhouse Digg.com for $500,000, sources close to the matter told the Wall Street Journal. Betaworks founder John Borthwick will be the new CEO of Digg.

“I’ve always been a fan of John’s product vision and the companies he builds, funds, and advises,” said Kevin Rose, co-founder of Digg. “John understands the real-time nature of the web and how to capture and surface trends as they occur. Given his experience with bit.ly, news.me, and Chartbeat I can’t wait to see what he does with Digg.”

More bad news for Facebook, as site crashes

Media_httpgigaom2file_fhccw
via gigaom.com

Facebook isn’t having a good May. First its IPO didn’t “pop” and then the stock traded down the week after it went public. And on Thursday night the social network experienced a substantial outage, going dark for up to 80 minutes for some people. The site is still loading slowly for me and is apparently out for some people at 6:35 PT.

After six years of construction, One World Trade Center will surpass the 1250-foot Empire State Building as the tallest in New York this afternoon.
