The Great Tablet War Of 2012

Media_httpstatic2busi_kryaj
via businessinsider.com

Make no mistake: There’s a full-blown battle on for the future of computing.

Forget all the fragmentary skirmishes for your pocket, for your set-top, for your living room, and for your desk.

It’s become increasingly clear that the tablet is the defining device of the next couple decades of computing, as the PC was in the ’80s.

Handheld touchscreen devices are the key way we’ll consume content and buy things.

So that’s extremely interesting to anyone who makes devices, serves up content, or sells things.

Computational Re-photography of World War II Photos By Sergey Larenkov

Media_httpwwwinspiref_lkher
via inspirefusion.com

Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov took some old photographs from World War II and combined them with new perspective-matching photos. This technique is called perspective-matching photography or computational re-photography.

Computational re-photography is a fancy name for photos taken from the exact same viewpoint as an old photograph. Actually, that’s just re-photography. The “computational” part is when software helps out.

In June of 2010, a security firm in Belarus called VirusBlokAda reported the first known citing of what we know now as Stuxnet. It was, simply put, the most advanced malware of all time. Its target? Iran. Its origin? Unknown. Until now.

The New York Times is reporting today that the source of the worm so advanced some thought it was alien weapon was us. And it wasn’t the first.

13 Old War Photographs You Won’t Believe Aren’t Photoshopped

Media_httpicrackedcdn_ghgeb
via cracked.com

World War II was a hell of a time. Ask your grandpa: He’ll tell you all about the solemn, grim-faced, gritty reality of the whole thing until you become grizzled by proxy. Now, we’re not going to sit here and say your grandpa is full of crap (the guy could probably still gut us with a can opener). We’re just saying that maybe some of the ways we picture WWII looking — all razor-jawed men charging through the mud in black and white — isn’t entirely accurate. Because we know for a fact that at least some of the soldiers were carrying floppy dong-shaped rifles into battle, and those air aces had the most fabulous planes …

Israeli Air Force May Use Nano Drones, Missile Launching Algorithm In Future - Military Tech

Media_httpcdndevicema_fingi
via devicemag.com

A serious brain storming session that was on since mid-2009 has recently concluded at the headquarters of the Israeli Air Force in Tel Aviv. During the effort, named IAF 2030, some 300 Israeli Air Force officers were asked to deliberate on different aspects of the development of the air force.

What came out from the session, though highly classified, is very interesting. Officers were divided into eight groups to look into different aspects like Advanced Information Technology, Vast Data, Space, Cyber, Environment, Intelligence, Human Factor and Organizational Behavior. Then to keep the brain storming sessions intensive, a ninth ‘Red Team’ was formed to challenge the assumptions formulated by the other groups.

30+ Vintage & Modern War Propaganda Posters

Media_httpwwwandysowa_pdvbm
via andysowards.com

So me and the kids were watching “The Iron Giant” today (good movie) and the scene came up with the “Duck & Cover” video part – and that got me to thinking about all the awesome propaganda posters I had seen lately. So today we have rounded up some of the best Vintage and Modern War Propaganda posters we could find!

I find history completely fascinating – but the propaganda really shows you the dark side of people, and the governments, influencing people to do what they want with catchy slogans and banners. These posters kind of creep me out for some reason, but at the same time the design is fantastic, and the reality is somewhat skewed – it reminds me of all of the “fallout” games and movies of post-apocalyptic nuclear holocaust lands – I think those movies kind of warped my view of these propaganda things.

Anyway – its all good fun & inspiration now to look back on our world history and how scared we were (and still are) of wars and nuclear weapons. Hopefully we can all look at a brighter future where we don’t need wars or their propaganda . Whatever you are working on I hope you enjoy these poster designs!

North Korean War Propaganda Is Even Crazier than You Thought

Media_httpimggawkeras_yiqoq
via gizmodo.com

What do you do when your rockets are broken, your nukes are just threats, and the whole world thinks you’re a joke? Shout! Lots of shouting! Shouting and half-naked ninja moves and shooting RPGs at cardboard cutouts! In the woods!

This segment denouncing the government of South Korea by way of yelling and pistol-brandishing was recently broadcast across North Korean TV. Which is interesting, because four people in North Korea own a TV.

Kim Jong-un would also be wise to maybe take a few hundred bucks out of his Rockets That Don’t Work program and divert them toward a used DSLR, so that his country’s absurd propaganda flicks don’t look like terrible late 80s VHS action movies.

Watching This Is the Closest You’ll Get to Aerial Combat

Media_httpimggawkeras_xvugs
via gizmodo.com

If you’ve ever dreamt of flying a jet into war—I see you, joystick jockeys—this incredible GoPro footage is your best new alternative. Watch it in fullscreen if you actually want to feel nauseous.

All that’s missing is the g-force factor pulling at your face, and, of course, the risk of crashing or being blown out of the sky. But that’s OK! These F-15 videographers were just training, anyway, as part of ACM (Air Combat Maneuvering) dogfight practice between the “Fighting Cocks” (hush) and “Vampire Bats” squadrons, based out of Japan. But man, it looks like the real thing: flares released, midair refueling, and best of all, the absolutely crazy maneuvering. All the Top Gun radio chatter helps with the mood, too.
