iPhone 5 and iPad Mini launching at the same time? Why?

Media_httpasset0cbsis_sglbh
via news.cnet.com

I know that Apple likes to add one more thing to its launch events. It makes them more dramatic, like a thriller with a twist.

A question, though, is whether the itty-bitty iPad that’s been rumored to arrive for a while now will be iPhone 5’s one more thing.

Initially, much respect was paid to a report from iMore that both these next life-changing works of art would be revealed on September 12, with the possibility that both products would be released at the same time.

Apple stores generally hold overnights to put up signage for major product releases. Assuming the July 24 date holds, Mountain Lion will likely launch on July 25.

The First Television and Telephone Satellite Launched 50 Years Ago

Media_httpimggawkeras_itjbf
via gizmodo.com

On July 10th, 1962, NASA launched the first Telstar satellite. The spherical satellite—which actually looks like a model of the Death Star—was the first to relay television and telephone signals through space.

In fact, just two days after launch on July 12, 1962, the satellite transmitted a television signal across the Atlantic Ocean from Andover Earth Station in Maine to the Pleumeur-Bodou Telecom Center in Brittany, France. According to the excellent history at Telstar50.org, the first images from the United States were of President John F. Kennedy and the first beamed over from France were of singer Yves Montand, along with clips of sporting events. Telstar 1 was also responsible for the first telephone calls—some 400 of them—sent through space.

Microsoft announced today that its new Windows 8 operating system for PCs will launch at the end of October.

The news comes out of the company’s Worldwide Partners Conference in Toronto.

Microsoft will push the Release To Manufacturing (RTM) version of the software to hardware partners in August so they can get devices ready for the launch.

Microsoft announced last week that current Windows XP, Vista, or 7 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99.

Media_httpcdndigitalt_gycbn
via digitaltrends.com

Microsoft is holding a special event in Los Angeles on Monday, for which few details are available. It’s thought the computer company could be about to unveil a tablet to take on the iPad.

Oh, really? Another iPad killer? Haven’t we heard it all before? Every tablet released these days is touted as a possible killer, but let’s face it, they not only fail to injure the iPad, they barely cause a scratch.

This time the talk surrounds Microsoft. Entertainment blog The Wrap reported on Thursday that according to “an individual with knowledge of the company,” the computer giant is about to unveil a tablet “that will mark its entry into rival Apple’s territory.”
