Why Google’s homepage antics are more serious than they appear

Google’s use of its homepage to advertise its own products and display pop-up birthday reminders for its Google+ network on its homepage may seem like just an annoyance, but each step the company takes toward promoting its own offerings raises more red flags for antitrust regulators.

Stop the presses. Google has an ad on its homepage.

Having the cleanest homepage on the internet has often been attributed to much of Google’s early success. Before they were the search engine, they competed against Yahoo, Microsoft Live, Alta Vista, and other portal sites that had ads, news, and just about everything else that one could fit onto a single website. Google’s was clean back then and remains clean today.

Every now and then, they do some promotions. Today, they used the most visited page on the internet to display a simple message:

“The playground is open. The new $199 tablet from Google.”

Were Two Pyramids Just Discovered in Egypt Using Google Earth?

Media_http8mshcdncomw_ddbdu
via mashable.com

Here’s a good one for all those who got excited when it was rumored the lost continent of Atlantis was found on Google Earth: A researcher now thinks she’s found two undiscovered pyramids in Egypt on Google Earth.

The two possible complexes are located about 90 miles apart from each other in Upper Egypt (the southern part of the country). Satellite archaeology researcher Angela Micol wrote on her website Google Earth Anomalies that the sites contain unusual mounds with noteworthy features.

“Upon closer examination of the formation, this mound appears to have a very flat top and a curiously symmetrical triangular shape that has been heavily eroded with time,” Micol.

Google Lays the Smack Down on Torrent Sites in Search Results

Media_httpimggawkeras_wwzsv
via gizmodo.com

Next week Google will begin censoring sites for which it receives a large number of copyright removal requests by reducing their Google site rank across their entire domains.

Google’s Transparency Report reveals that some sites used for torrenting pirated content receive more than 100,000 complaints a month. While Google has refused the requests of organizations like the RIAA to stop listing these sites altogether, it’ll be effectively doing the same thing by pushing them down in your search results. Yes, censorship. And it won’t do a lick to stop piracy.

Google to pull Gmail information into search engine results

Media_httpbetaimagest_kwzwz
via theglobeandmail.com

Google Inc. is creating an information bridge between its influential Internet search engine and its widely used Gmail service in its latest attempt to deliver more personal responses faster.

The experimental feature unveiled Wednesday will enable Google’s search engine to mine the correspondence stored within a user’s Gmail account for any data tied to a search request. For example, a query containing the word “Amazon” would pull e-mails with shipping information sent by the online retailer.

Google’s First 20 Employees: Where Are They Now?

Media_httpstatic4busi_khcah
via businessinsider.com

Marissa Mayer was Google’s 20th employee. Now only 7 of the initial 20 remain at the search giant that made them all rich (excluding founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page).

Some have become entrepreneurs, others are angel investors, and a few are happily retired.

A Quora user compiled a list of all the original Googlers and where they are now. We did some additional digging to find out which roles they had, when they joined, and more.

First Google Chat, Now Twitter Fails

Media_httpcdntheatlan_qpejg
via theatlanticwire.com

Many users now have their Gchat back after Thursday morning’s service failure, but are now facing a new blackout around lunchtime: Twitter won’t load! Twitter’s status website says: “Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.” Even the workaround of logging in through the mobile site isn’t working. Let’s hope these things don’t come in threes (Pinterest? Tumblr?) or people will have to actually do work today.

Google continues its war on anonymity, and YouTube is next

Media_httpcdn4digital_rezho
via digitaltrends.com

YouTube users are now being prompted to provide their real names in lieu of aliases as it tries to legitimize its social self.

If Facebook knows anything, it’s that real names are a valuable commodity. Unlike blogging communities or early stabs at social networks, the platform has always made using your real name a requirement for having an account.
